What are the main causes of back pain?

Back pain is a very common complaint with approximately 85% of all adults having experienced some back pain. 

 

There are many causes back pain, including repetitive motions, standing and sitting for long periods, car accidents, slip-and-fall accidents, sports injuries, bad posture, and poor ergonomics at work, sleep or school etc.

 

Poor lifting techniques and carrying heavy bags can also shift your spine out of alignment resulting in impingements on nerves (sometimes known as sciatica) as well as soft tissue inflammation. Chiropractors can help you identify and treat back pain by understanding your history and doing a thorough physical exam. 

What does a chiropractor do for back pain?

I am often asked "can a chiropractor help with back pain?"

 

Chiropractors are skilled at identifying your problem areas. We look for causes to your problems throughout the whole body from the feet up to the skull. Chiropractic is recognised as a leading first line approach to low back pain and is continuing to be utilised by many people who find themselves in discomfort

Is there anything I can do to prevent back pain?

Yes, there are several steps you can take to avoid or reduce the stresses and strains that can result in chronic back pain.

  • Practicing good posture is critical, especially when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

  • Ask your chiropractor about using a supportive device if your job requires lots of repetitive bending, lifting or twisting.

  • Wear good, supportive footwear, and avoid carrying uneven loads like heavy bags that can cause the spine to move out of alignment.

  • Get plenty of exercise 

  • Invest in a supportive mattress

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Drink enough water to hydrate joints
